Our economy is in a state of turmoil. This leads us to a question many people are asking these days. Are there any legitimate work at home jobs to be found? The short answer is yes, however, there are not as many as you might think... considering all the interest there is in working at home. They can be difficult to find to say the least.

However, persistant and aggressive individuals are landing these jobs every day. There are companies that hire employees and contractors to work outside the office and you can find work at home job listings online.

People who are looking for home jobs will need to spend a fair amount of time searching for legitimate opportunities, as well as a significant amount of time screening out frauds.

Getting Started There are quite a few people who transitioned from a traditional job to working out of their home. This is an arrangement made with their employer to work some or all of time at home. Highly skilled and valuable employees are much more likely to negotiate a situation like this.

Basically, companies choose to allow this rather than losing a valuable employee. Most of these people are moms who work part-time from the office and part-time from home in order to accommodate their children's class schedules. In most of these cases, employees, who had a good track record, negotiated flexible work hours

In other cases, you can work as a home based agent where you are an employee of the company who works from a home office, providing customer service to client companies. Virtual assistants provide administrative, secretarial, and clerical support, as well as creative and/or technical services for clients.

The exception is those who have experience in a business sector which requires someone to be highly skilled with advanced technical knowledge. In other words... if you are an MBA or Computer Programmer then the home job might find you.

Otherwise, a work at home job with benefits is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Be Flexible Flexibility is essential to successfully working from home. If you will consider a freelance or contract job or are willing to combine a couple of part-time positions, you'll have a much better chance of success in finding something. It's also very important to take the time to search for positions and to thoroughly research an opportunity before acceptance.

Finding Legitimate Work at Home Jobs Finding a real work at home job is obviously more difficult than landing a more traditional job. Despite all the online classified ads and postings, there aren't as many as you would think. Those that are available may require you to relocate or live in a specific geographic territory. You should also be prepared to spend at least some time in the office. Others may be part-time or freelance, so, you may need to keep your eyes open for something else on an ongoing basis. .

You should clearly understand that the skills needed for home employment will be about the same as those needed for working in an office. You need both the background experience and the skills necessary to do the job. You'll also need a home office with phone, fax, computer, printer, software, and other basic office equipment.

Getting Started with a Work From Home Job Search First off, consider yourself employed full time searching for your home job. Commit to as many hours per week to your search as you would spend working. If you're looking for a full-time job, work full-time hours seeking employment. Make sure you have an updated and current resume listing all your good qualities.

Networking is still the best strategy for finding online work at home. Develop contacts - friends, family, neighbors, high school & college alumni, and even trusted co-workers. There are the Newsgroups, Discussion Groups and Job Search Forums - These can help generate information and job leads. Go to Google and enter these keyword search phrases.

Use a direct approach and ask for job opening leads or else ask for information and advice. Contact everyone you know and tell them you want to work from home.

Work at Home Websites Review the websites that post work at home jobs and look through all the listings and if the site has one...take advantage of the Resume Posting section. That way companies seeking employers will be able to find your resume.

Use the job search engines using terms like "work at home" "telecommute" and "freelance." Next, search the online job banks using keywords like "work at home" "telecommute" and "telecommuting" Searching Monster.com, for example, using "telecommuting" as a keyword generates almost 200 listings. "Work at home" generates close to a 1000 positions. Searching Yahoo! HotJobs will bring similar results.

This is a time when it make sense not to simply search the web search engines. I've found that searching for "work at home" most often brings up scams or web sites that want to charge you for providing "real" work at home jobs or for "proven successful" home business information. Rather, stick with the sites that focus on employment.

Be prepared to apply online. Once again have a current resume and cover letter ready to send. You may also need examples or work samples to send to prospective employers. Keep good records of where you've applied. Many of the same jobs are posted on multiple sites. This will prevent you from duplicating your efforts. .

Work From Home Scams: There are more work from home business opportunities than there are work from job listings, so home employment seekers must be careful when searching for and evaluating work at home income sources.
